Some countries require a transit visa even if you never leave the airport. Check the official immigration website of every country you pass through, not just your final destination, before booking your flights.
The rule that catches people out
A transit visa requirement is decided by the country you stop in, your passport, and sometimes even your route history. Two travelers on the same flight can face different rules. Never assume that staying inside the terminal means no visa is needed.
Three things to check before you book
- Does your passport need a transit visa for that stop? Look it up on the stopover country’s official immigration site.
- Is your connection inside the international area? Some airports require you to clear immigration to change terminals or re-check bags, which counts as entering the country.
- Does your ticket include baggage re-check? If you must collect and re-check luggage, you almost always need to pass through border control.
Long layovers and overnight stays
Some countries allow a short visa-free transit window, others make no exception at all. If your layover runs overnight or you plan to leave the airport even briefly, treat it as a separate entry question rather than part of your journey.
Do this before you pay for flights
List every country on your route, then check the transit rules for each one in turn. It takes an afternoon, and it is far cheaper than discovering the problem at the check-in desk.
