The UAE welcomes millions of visitors each year. Plan around the summer heat, respect local customs and dress codes, and check the official UAE government portal for the latest entry requirements for your nationality.
1. Pick your season deliberately
Summers are extremely hot, with inland temperatures regularly above 40°C. The most comfortable window for sightseeing is roughly November to March, when evenings are mild and outdoor dining is pleasant. If you travel in the heat, expect to plan indoors and move between air-conditioned spaces.
2. Entry rules depend on your passport
Some nationalities receive visa-free entry, some get a visa on arrival, and others must apply in advance. The only reliable answer for your passport is the official UAE government portal or your nearest UAE embassy. Rules change, and a summary written months ago may no longer be correct.
3. Dress codes are part of daily life
Malls, government buildings, and family areas expect modest dress. Shoulders and knees covered is a safe default in public spaces, and beachwear belongs at the beach or pool. Ramadan brings additional daytime etiquette in public places.
4. Some everyday items are restricted
Certain medicines available over the counter elsewhere are controlled in the UAE. Check the official list before you pack any medication, and carry prescriptions in original packaging. Bringing the wrong item in your bag can turn a smooth arrival into a serious problem.
5. Friday is not just another day
The working week runs Sunday to Thursday, with Friday afternoon and Saturday forming the weekend. Mornings on Friday are quiet as many businesses pause for midday prayers, so plan museum and office visits accordingly.
